Everyone should wear a helmet for snow sports. Regardless of skill level, accidents can happen and protecting your head from injury is an absolute necessity.
But, for those who like to look fashionable on the slopes, donning a helmet can be like wearing hiking boots with a haute couture dress.
Enter Helmet Huggers
Available in a wide variety of colors and faux fur trims, Helmet Huggers are perfect for anyone looking to add a bit of glam to their ski helmet. I recently caught up with Natalie with the Helmet Huggers team and asked her to tell us a little more…
What’s a helmet hugger?
A helmet hugger is an accessory that makes what we think is an ordinary, dorky helmet into something fun and fashionable. It’s the last thing you put on before you walk out the door and head to the slopes… Kind of like lipstick before a big night out – it’s not necessary but it makes you look just that much better…that much more polished and more classy.
How did you come up with the idea?
My mom (Melanie) actually came up with the idea when we were skiing with our younger brother Jordan. He has this bright red, devil horn helmet cover and my mom thought “Wow, those are great – I wonder if there’s any out there for myself!”
She loved the fact that he stood out from the rest, it provided some extra warmth, and how well it went with his red and black ski outfit.
But when she started looking for a helmet cover for herself, she realized the only ones out there for women were just the same as the styles for kids…. my mom wanted something more fashionable, something she would feel good about wearing…
So when my sister, Stephanie, had to come up with a business plan for a new idea in one of her last college classes, my mom thought “Why not try it out and see if it could work?” When Stephanie got second place, that’s when we decided we’d make the idea into a reality.
What are they made of?
The base of it is a spandex shell with an elastic bungee sewn along the inner edge, allowing you to tighten and loosen it until it fits the helmet snugly. A faux fur band is sewn around the outside edge of the spandex shell.
Can you wash them?
If you get a spot on your helmet hugger, it’s better to just spot clean it! Hand-washing the spandex is fine, But if you think you really need to wash the entire cover, it’s probably best to consult your dry cleaner to see what they can do (we can’t guarantee the quality of the faux fur after its been washed or dry cleaned).
Where do you sell them?
We have a few of our styles that we’re selling at a ski store in Westwood, NJ (Called Mount Everest). However, we’re mostly using our website as our store front.
The Lady Morgan
I recently tried the Lady Morgan in black with tan wolf faux fur trim. It easily fit over my helmet and comes with velcro to keep it securely into place.
