In the shadow of the beautiful Dom Tower in Utrecht, Team Giant-Alpecin presented their Tour de France team on Wednesday morning inside the Cathedral of Saint Martin.
The team, consisting of Warren Barguil (FRA), Roy Curvers (NED), John Degenkolb (GER), Tom Dumoulin (NED), Simon Geschke (GER), Koen de Kort (NED), Georg Preidler (AUT), Ramon Sinkeldam (NED) and Albert Timmer (NED), expressed their enthusiasm as the Grand Depart approaches.
Coming off great spring results with both Milano-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix victories, there is much anticipation surrounding John Degenkolb and the stage 4 cobbles. Addressing this, Degenkolb stated:
I think we have a lot of opportunities and not just one stage. It would not be wise to only focus on one stage. I think we should go flexible into the Tour and should be prepared for every scenario.”
The obvious omission from the team is star sprinter, Marcel Kittel, who had a disappointing spring and then caught a virus from which he has not returned to top form, resulting in his exclusion from the Tour team.
As the team heads toward the race start and three weeks covering over 3,000km, the Team Giant-Alpecin coaching staff addressed the Kittel issue by simply stating:
We are a strong team that can do more than sprint.”
